Need a break from sightseeing?

If youd like to a break from sightseeing, Exeter is a hub for adventure and extreme sports, including rockclimbing, windsurfing, and the best shipwreck diving in the country, and that's only to mention a few!

  The Cathedral

Why Exeter...?

Exeter has been 2000 years in the making - people have been living here since 200 years before the arrival of the Romans in 50AD. This makes it one of the oldest and most important cities in England. Elizabeth I gave us our motto Semper Fidelis "Always Faithful" and Elizabeth II started her Golden Jubilee Tour of the country at Exeter.

The Cathedral Green Exeter has been one of the most invaded cities in the country and the people of the area have historically been real rebels! The Romans made it a base (and they knew a thing or two about location!). Everywhere you walk there are plaques commemorating someones famous entrance to the City. Just up from Globe Backpackers you can touch the Roman wall at the point where Henry VI entered Exeter in 1423. William The Conqueror decided to build Rougemont Castle here after his successful invasion of 1066. Only a couple of gate towers survive and are the scene of the last witches to be tried to be hung in England.

Exeter has a great mix of old and new architecture, clubs and pubs, restaurants and cafes. Theres plenty to keep you busy, including daily free guided tours of the city and free museum and art galleries. You can even still drink a pint at both Sir Frances Drakes' and Charles Dickens' favourite pubs! The City also offers a broadbased music scene from University bands to Classical - dont forget to check out The Cavern if you're into the underground music scene (www.cavernclub.co.uk).

A must whilst in the area is a visit to the gorgeous Dartmoor National Park. An area of outstanding beauty with the highest concentration of prehistoric monuments in the country and it's right on our doorstep. Also, Dartmoor was the inspiration and setting for Sherlock Holmes Hound of the Baskevilles.
